Over the last 5 years Beefs and Clashes have started making a comeback in the underground scene as well as more recently the mainstream. But none have created more hype and debate than the recent beef between London based Grime/Pop Artist Chip aka Chipmunk and our very own Manchester based Hip Hop Artist / Battle Rapper Shotty Horroh.
When it comes to clashes, outside of Battle Rap, the match ups over the past few years have been pretty interesting . They begin with a couple of tracks that build a lot of hype but often end with no clear winner. Not to say they haven’t been entertaining, Ghetts vs P Money looked like it could be the next big clash to hit Lord Of The Mics since Skepta vs Devilman but never ended up happening. Then it was P Money vs Big H which many believe, including P Money, wasn’t even a clash.
And then in 2015 Chip did a Fire In The Booth on Charlie Sloth’s BBC Radio show and the whole underground scene went crazy with many taking offence to Chip sending for Tinie Tempah and basically the whole grime scene, claiming he has bars for anyone who wants to send back. This prompted diss tracks from Saskilla, Big Narstie, Devilman and more notably Manchester's Bugzy Malone who went on to have chart success. Although Chip responded to Bugzy Malone a whole 5 months later many think he won the beef due to the amount of diss tracks he sent for Bugzy.
Shortly afterwards Chip put out his version of Stormzy’s One Take, which turned out to be a send for Yungen who is part of Krept and Konan’s Play Dirty camp. But just as things were heating up between Chip and Yungen, Shotty Horroh surprised everyone with the release of his video Jab, Calling Chip out and stating “ If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best “ and has now put money on the table. £10000 each, winner takes the title and the money.
Since then social media has gone crazy debating the winner. Chip is no doubt on fire with the amount of shots he has sent and the release of his recent Mixtape Rap VS Grime but Shotty is also flaming after taking the Battle rap scene by storm here in the UK and overseas. People are talking about follower counts, youtube numbers and all that but for me, it is all about the bars. Both of them come from clashing. Both of them are heavyweights in their own fields and for the first time in a long time, money is now involved.
Let's see what happens next.
