In talks w/ JONNY DUB

We spoke to Manchester don Jonny Dub over a brew about all things Levelz and as it turns out, it’s not an easy task getting 14 people in the studio. Following an incredible Boiler Room last week, here’s what he had to say.

We absolutely love the new Levelz album and can’t stop listening to it. Where can we expect to see the guys over the next coming months? Any festival plans for the summer?

Thanks! It means a lot. After 2 years graft it’s great to see it all together. Festival wise, we’ve got Parklife, Gottwood, Boomtown, Outlook and a couple of others.

We’ve also got the Red Bull Sound Clash on Thurs 10th March, which we’re all really excited for. It’s sick to be representing Manchester with a bunch of local artists.

Will you win?

I hope so. There’s a lot of stiff competition and we’d love to win, but again it’s just great to be taking part.

Boiler Room. Wow. It was incredible.

Yes it was!

Can you tell us about what you’re currently working on? Anything new in the pipelines?

Yeah, there’s always something being worked on. There’s a few projects I’m involved in and also some collaborations. But I can’t say much more than that unfortunately. I’m going back to Japan at some point this year as well which I’m looking forward to. Big up Part2Style every time as well those guys are cool and I love how we’re making this connection between Manchester and Asia.

Awesome! We have to ask… Rich Reason’s dress sense. Views?

Awful. Terrible. Once he rocked up wearing odd trainers and suit pants.

Is the fur jacket real fur?

Haha nah it’s not actually! Big up to Rich though, the amount of hard work he puts it is sick. Not just for himself, but for all of us.

Good man. So what made you all decide to release the mixtape for free?

Well you can either grab it for free or pay an amount of your choice. We feel that it’s systemic of the current scene and it’s really important to build a family and a fanbase. These are the people who come and see us play and support us, so this mixtape is for them.

Respect! Who spends the most time in the studio then?

Probably me, Chimpo, Ruud (Metrodome) and Paddy (Biome).

Favourite track?

All of them.

Your label Hoya:Hoya unfortunately had to stop it’s events in Manchester after the closing of The Roadhouse. Are there any plans for a new venue?

Definitely. We’re looking into new venues and won’t be making any rash decisions so for now it’s on hold. But we’ll be back.

Yay! So before you shoot off to the studio, is there anything you’d like to tell us?

Well we’ve got a couple of videos coming out soon, for Slow Down and I think Rowdy Badd. We’ve got a guestmix soon for Complex Magazine as well, also Chimpo is recording a brand new Fabric mix.

Well it was awesome talking to you and we look forward to what’s next!

Yeah me too!

Catch Jonny and the rest of Levelz at the Red Bull Sound Clash on Thursday 10th March at Old Granada Studios.
